Menomonee Valley Industrial Center and Community Park
Landscape Consultation & Construction

Location: Milwaukee, WI
Construction Timeline: October 2005 – December 2007

This 120 acre site is situated in an abandoned industrial and railway corridor along Canal St near Miller Park in the city of Milwaukee along the Menomonee River.  Marek’s work began along the River where we performed erosion control measures in the watercourse and planted native trees and seed in conjunction with earthwork crews.  This urban river is flashy and restoration work was performed directly behind earthwork crews to minimize the chance of sediment being released into the waterway.  This work was performed in the fall and winter of 2005.  Marek did 80 acres of seeding work for erosion control of the development parcels to the West.  Beginning in the summer of 2006 Marek began the landscaping work for the rest of the park which included 5 acres of soccer fields, 7 acres of native seeding in the stormwater treatment train, 10,000 emergent aquatic plantings, more than 400 trees and 500 shrubs.  All work was completed within the construction schedule.  Marek was awarded a competitive bid and qualification contract for the ongoing maintenance of the project.  This included maintenance planning, scheduling, and costing for the park for the next three years.

Bradford Beach Stormwater Quality Project
Location: Milwaukee, WI
Construction Timeline: Spring/Summer 2008

This project involved the construction of five stormwater infiltration cells on Bradford Beach and three rain gardens in Lake Park on Milwaukee’s coast. The purpose of this project was to treat storm water from upland sewers which discharged onto the sands of Bradford Beach. The project design (by others) includes three rain gardens located in Lake Park, serving as the first step in the stormwater treatment train. Here, runoff from the park collects until levels reach the inlets of the catch basins. From there water drains to the outlets on the beach, the second step in the stormwater treatment train. Here, compost lined infiltration basins were constructed by berming up the existing sand. All natural erosion controls and dune grasses maintain outlet height consistency by maintaining the ebb and flow of sand migration. Permit restrictions were strict and the budget was tight.  Marek completed the trail on schedule and on budget.  In kind donations of materials from our vendors, labor from subcontractors, and equipment from suppliers totaled $25,000. Marek worked in conjunction with federal Americorps troops and helped coordinate their work and training.  The restoration of the sides of the trail entailed a wet mesic native prairie planting and erosion stabilization.
